Is TheBrain really free?
Yes. The complete app is free for everyone, with unlimited thoughts, every feature, and no expiration. We make money when you choose to add cloud sync, expanded AI, or collaboration on top.
What changed, and why?
We retired the one-time license. The software is now free for everyone, and our paid plans focus on the things with real ongoing cost: cloud services, and Cerebro AI.
I already bought a license. Am I losing anything?
No. Your license keeps working exactly as it always has, with every feature you paid for, forever. Pro License (license-only) customers also receive 12 months of Pro Service free as a thank-you. Recent Pro License buyers from the last 60 days can take a full refund or receive 18 months of Pro free. Pro Combo subscribers don't qualify for the free service credit or the refund offer, but keep their current $159/year loyalty rate going forward. Details in the section above.
What's Cerebro?
Cerebro is TheBrain's AI assistant. Unlike tools that just read your notes, Cerebro understands how your thoughts connect, surfacing the relationships across your knowledge graph that you'd otherwise miss. Free includes a daily taste. Pro and Max include full daily allowances.
Can I use TheBrain without ever paying?
Yes. The free version is genuinely complete on its own. Paid plans add things that depend on infrastructure we run for you, not on the capabilities of the app itself.
Do I need an account?
Not for the desktop app. Download and start using it without signing up. An account is only required if you choose to use our services.
